As your classroom changes, so does your role as a teacher. You may find yourself acting more as a coach and facilitator as your students become more active in their own learning. In this graduate-level course, you will explore how to foster and encourage self-directedness in your students and create a learning environment that encourages collaboration and creativity. Learn how you can help your students manage, monitor, and modify their own learning, and inspire them to develop the self-discipline and thinking skills they need to thrive in and outside of the classroom.
Teaching Tangibles
- Identify the characteristics of self-directedness in yourself and your students.
- Help students to refine and stretch their thinking beyond the first "right" answer.
- Introduce your students to the 12 Habits of Mind, including managing impulsivity, developing creativity, and improving persistence.
- Examine various ways to provide feedback that will help students produce high-quality work.
- Evaluate your role as a mediator of self-directed learning.

Art Costa, Ed.D.
Dr. Costa is emeritus professor at the School of Education, California State University, Sacramento, where he has taught graduate courses to teachers and administrators in curriculum, supervision, and the improvement of instruction. He is also co-director of the Institute for Intelligent Behavior. He has served as president of the national Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and has worked with numerous educational associations around the globe. A prolific writer, Dr. Costa has authored more than 100 journal articles, books, and papers. He co-authored Assessment in the Learning Organization: Shifting the Paradigm with Bena Kallick (ASCD, 1995).
Art Costa has also authored books available through Canter’s partner, Corwin press.
Bena Kallick, Ph.D.
Dr. Bena Kallick works as a private consultant focusing on curriculum development, instruction, and assessment. She has served as adjunct professor at Fairfield and Yale Universities. Dr. Kallick is on the Board of Directors for the Apple Foundation and is an active member of other educational organizations, such as Teaching and Technology, and Jobs for the Future. Dr. Kallick is co-author of Assessment in the Learning Organization: Shifting the Paradigm (ASCD 1995).
Bena Kallick has also authored books available through Canter’s partner, Corwin press.
Marian Leibowitz, M.A.
Ms. Leibowitz is a leading teacher-educator who brings 40 years of teaching, administrative, and consulting experience to educators throughout the United States and in 14 other countries. Formerly adjunct professor at several universities, she has been a catalyst for improving instructional programs in school districts nationwide. Her work with the Center for Leadership in Education has enabled school districts to implement systemic changes that redefine teaching and learning for the 21st century.

Prerequisite
This is a graduate-level course; therefore, you must have a bachelor's degree or above to enroll and receive credit.
Earning Graduate Credit
Total coursework for this course is equivalent to a 45 contact-hour course. Graduate credit will be issued when you successfully complete the following course requirements:
- Collaborate with study partner(s) (Print & DVD format only).
- Collaborate with colleagues through discussion boards (Online format only).
- View video segments.
- Complete required text/journal readings, assignments, and the final paper.
